Small Business Internet Marketing

Small business Internet marketing isn't about “build it (a website) and they will come”. They can only come after you get into the habit of working on your website continually and in a way that places your web pages at the top of the Search Engine Results Pages (SERPs).

The Importance of Keywords

small business internet marketingIf you are to be successful in your small business Internet marketing efforts, you need to base your website content on keywords that attract a steady flow of highly targeted prospects. If you're selling shoes, and makes the word ‘shoes' the main keyword for your site, you will quickly realize that there are millions of results which will show up if this keyword is put into a browser.  And most of them have nothing to do with people who want to buy shoes from you.

“Shoes” is simply too broad a term and too competitive to be useful in small business Internet marketing.

On the other hand, there are at least three major advantages to using longer key phrases which are generally referred to as long tail keywords.

Three Advantages of Long-Tail Keywords

  1. Long tail keywords are important phrases that drive more highly target visitors to your site. If the seller has the phrase “black leather sneakers” as the keyword, he'll get very different and much better results than from the overly broad keyword “shoes.”
  2. People searching for longer tail key phrases are also generally closer to making a buying decision.  Someone who searches for “shoes” might not even need shoes, they could be doing some sort of research on, for example, the history of shoes.  In contrast, the person who searches for “Discount price Size 9C New Balance black leather sneakers” is likely to buy that pair of shoes sooner rather than later.
  3. Finally, over time you may also begin to get traffic for broader keywords that are included inside the long tails (for example, “leather sneakers” in the example above).

Keyword Research

Search engines such as Google provide keyword tools that are free to use. These tools are crucial when hunting for key phrases to include in your small business internet marketingwebsite copy.  There are also a number of great paid tools, but why not start with the free ones?

The Google Adwords Keyword Planner will return phrases like “red leather shoes”, “where to buy leather shoes” etc, and it's up to you to choose which long-tail key phrases to use. It's best to go somewhere in mid range of search phrases, say 3,000 to six thousand searches per month.  Terms with more searches than that are likely to be too competitive, at least at first.  Your aim is to get on page 1 of Google's search results, which is not easy regardless of what the marketing “gurus” tell you.

Posting on Purpose

There are numerous strategies that you will want to learn to help you achieve success in your small business Internet marketing. One of the most important is the strategy of posting on purpose whether you are creating a blog post, an article, or a static sales page.  Knowing whether you're posting for traffic or leads or sales will help guide everything from your keyword research to the final content on your site.
