Tip #1 – Begin With the End in Mind
Let's start with one of the article marketing tips that separates the successful article marketers from the also-rans. Before you put pen to paper, ask yourself what you want to get out of your article. A partial list includes:
- What niche are you targeting?
- Who is your target prospect?
- What challenge(s) are they facing that you can help solve?
- What is the goal of your article (e.g., branding, lead generation, sales?
A lot of article marketers simply blast out articles with no apparent master plan or strategy. Although there is something to be said for proliferation, by starting with the end in mind, you can make your article marketing much more effective in terms of the results you receive.
Tip #2 – Lead With Quality
Leading with quality is an absolute must if you want to get your article accepted by any of the top article directory. In fact, it goes far beyond a simple article marketing tip and should be considered the “prime directive” of attraction marketing. Deliver usable information that solves a problem the prospects in your niche are likely to be experiencing. Be of service and let them get to know, like, and trust you. Only then have you earned the right to ask them to buy from you.
You may need to revise your blog posts before you can re-purpose them for submission to the article directories. While it is not unusual for blog posts to contain multiple outbound links, most article directories do not allow outbound links in the body of the article. Save them for the author resource box, and plan on a maximum of two.
Tip #3 – Original Content Only
At best, duplicate content doesn't help you and, worst case, it can even hurt your article and page rankings. One of the best article directories, EzineArticles, actually does a manual approval of each article you submit and can refuse to accept the article if duplicate content is found anywhere on the Internet. Others have published rules of thumb for how much of your content must be original to avoid the duplicate content penalty. Unless you're spinning content for SEO purposes, it's easier just to write your own articles and not worry about it.
Tip #4 – Make Sure Your Article Gets Found
So, you know you can write a great article. You have the perfect product to promote. You've even followed all of the other “article marketing tips” in this post. Still, it will all be for nothing if no one reads the article.
The good news is that the major article directories come with a built-in reader base. People go to them just like they go to Google or YouTube to search for information. That reduces the competition and makes it more likely your article will be read. Even then, you'll need a benefits-rich, enticing title to separate your article from the others in the directory.
You'll also want to target one (and only one) keyword or keyword phrase as the subject of your article and it needs to be a popular search term in your niche. Do the appropriate keyword research to find search terms that you can effectively compete for with the promotional tools and knowledge at your disposal. Effectively competing means you can get on the first page of the search engine results.
As important as it is for your content to be found, one of the most important article marketing tips is not to write for the search engines. Remember, your actual audience is real people. Write for them but in a way that also makes it easy for the search engines to understand what your article is all about.
Tip #5 – Backlinks
In addition to the opportunity to introduce readers to your offerings, article marketing also lets you generate backlinks that you can point anywhere you like. And the top article directories are all viewed by the search engines as authority sites with high Page Rank. You'll want to use these wisely.
Clearly, one of your backlinks should go to your offer. The other(s), depending on how many the directory allows you to include, could go to your money site, your YouTube channel, another article on another directory, or anywhere else the “link juice” helps your off-page SEO strategy. Be aware, however, that the search engines only credit one backlink from any website to a specific page on the receiving site. So, for example, having multiple backlinks from one article directory to one blog post doesn't help. Plan ahead to maximize the benefit you receive from this “link juice.”
