5-Step Content Marketing System
A sound content marketing system can be a source of a nearly endless supply of well-qualified, targeted, low-cost leads for your business. The better your system, the more and better leads it will provide.
What is Content Marketing?
Simply, content marketing is providing content that your ideal prospects will find interesting and valuable and that will help them overcome their current challenges in your selected niche. In doing so, you will build a relationship with your readers who will come to know, like, and trust you and think of you as both a friend and an expert in your field.
Content Marketing Platforms
There are numerous content marketing platforms through which you can deliver your content to your prospects. Among them:
- Blogs and vLogs
- Article Distribution Sites
- Video Distribution Sites
- Social Media Sites
- Books and eBooks
- And more
Regardless of the platform(s) you select, you will need to follow a consistent content marketing system in order to get your content in front of the largest possible number of prospects.
5-Step Content Marketing System
Although I use this system primarily for content posted to my blog and for videos, it is applicable to any of the content marketing platforms you may prefer (except maybe for some of the social media sites that are more about social proof and less about search engine optimization (SEO)).
1. Target a specific niche market
I know it seems counter-intuitive sometimes but, in general and assuming you do some research before making your selection, the narrower your niche the less competition you have and the more money you can make. If nothing else, it will bring focus and discipline to your content marketing. Once you are getting results in one niche, feel free to expand to another using a different platform.
2. Offer solutions to your niche
Whether in the form of your free content or the products or services you choose to offer, lead with value. It will help you create the kind of relationship you want with your prospects and help to differentiate you as a leader in your niche.
3. Do keyword research
It won't do you any good to produce the greatest piece of content ever written in no one sees it, and the way most people find content on the Internet is through the Search Engine Results Pages (SERPs). This step could be, and has been, the topic of multi-day trainings, so I won't be able to do it justice here. Look for future blog posts or comment below with specific questions.
The bottom line is you want a keyword that has a decent number of people searching for information, but that is not so competitive that you have no chance of getting your content on the first page of the SERPs.
4. Create your content
See Item #2, above. The first goal of your content should be to provide value to your prospects. If you intend to promote your content via SEO, writing for the Search Engines should be a distant second goal. Some SEO tactics such as keyword stuffing not only make your content awkward for people to read, but can also backfire with the search engines.
5. Promote Your Content
Finally, you'll want to promote your content to get it to rank. Your target is to get it as close to the top of the first page of the SERPs as possible. That means having a working understanding of how the Search Engines rank sites. Ultimately, you should work to get as many backlinks and social media “votes” from as many sources as possible. Again, look for more on this in future posts.
The five steps described above should form the basis for your “content marketing system” to ensure that you are both forming profitable relationships with your readers and giving yourself the best opportunity for ranking your content high enough on the SERPs for it to be found.
